Scalextric Pick-up Braids: our current range

Hi-Spec 20mm Braids

These are for what we loosely term 'Vintage' models. Cars which ran the original standardised guide type, in which the braids were trapped in their retaining slots by brass eyelets on the ends of the motor leads. They were standard fitting on almost all models from the 1960's, right up to 1990, when they were phased out in favour of the first 'Easy-Fit' design.

We do also still have just a few of the original 20mm Scalextric braid left, which we are prepared to part with for anyone wanting to return a car to showroom standard (for actual use, the Hi-Spec braid is both cheaper and superior in all respects).

Each order for these braids comes with a printed copy of our illustrated 20mm/Vintage Guide 'Fitting and Tuning' notes leaflet.
Prices quoted are those in our Auctiva Commerce Store. We do also still have some packs of 4 braids, which we are phasing out but will continue to sell until they've all gone.

Hi-Spec 27mm Braids

This size was developed as the ultimate braid for the original 1990 'Easy-Fit' guide, by popular request, shortly after the 20mm one was introduced. Its' descendants continue to this day in Scalextric's 'Sport' range, and the braid is equally at home used in the modern 'Disc' braid holder too. All current cars, in fact, with the exception of Drift Cars and other 360-degree spimmers, which have the longer oval braid plate.

Hi-Spec 40mm Braids

Very shortly after Christmas 2007 we started to receive requests for a longer braid. Drift-Cars had been a big Christmas hit. They used a similar 'commutator' guide-post to the old stock-cars from the late 1980s and had an oval guide plate. After enlisting a few customers to test for us we settled on a length of 40mm (bit longer than the standard braid to allow an overlap at the top).

Guess what? We got it right again! This time, though, we did have a deep debt of gratitude to the customers who took part in the test program, reporting back and sending photos for us to use! I won't forget and still credit them in some of the listings.

Budget Braids

Last year our former design assistant, Debbie, started producing her own packs, using our braid, but doing big production runs of just one single size braid, single pack size, no labels and no fancy instructions to keep the cost as low as possible. She settled on 25mm length as a good compromise which fits all the current models (Drift-Cars excepted) plus Micro-Scalextric too.

They sold really well so, when she left us for bigger things just after Christmas, I brought them into the CT&M range (I've really pushed the boat out, too, and now include an instruction leaflet with the set we sell for the Micro cars)!

Soon, we will be trying a Drift-Car version of these, 35mm long (same length as the standard Scalextric one). I just have the tooling jigs to make before we can start full production, but I will make some prototypes in smaller quantity on the Hi-Spec tooling to test the market first. Price will be subsidised down to the volume production target price of £2.75 for a pack of 20 with postage still at just £0.39.
